What does each covering actually cost here?
Architectural asphalt runs $4.50 to $8.50 per square foot installed, and standing seam metal runs $10 to $16. On a typical Houston-area home that is $7,500 to $16,500 against $16,000 to $26,000 for a 2,000 square foot roof, based on 2026 price guides.
Roofers quote by the square, a unit of 100 square feet. Asking both bids to price the same number of squares is the only way to compare them honestly.
How does each one handle Gulf Coast wind?
Metal panels resist uplift across a whole plane; shingles resist it tab by tab. Wind lifts the leading edge of a shingle until the seal strip lets go, then peels the course behind it. A clipped standing seam panel has no equivalent leading edge to catch.
That matters here specifically. Fulshear amends the IRC with its own design wind speed of 130 mph, above the 110 mph figure the City of Houston applies. Hurricane Beryl made landfall as a Category 1 storm on 8 July 2024, and the National Weather Service recorded a 76 mph gust at Sugar Land in Fort Bend County.

What does hail do differently to each?
Hail fractures an asphalt mat and dents a metal panel. The distinction is functional against cosmetic. A bruised shingle keeps shedding water for a season, then splits along the fracture. A dented panel keeps working and keeps looking dented.
Homeowners who dislike visible dents are choosing asphalt for a reason. Homeowners who want the roof to stop being a recurring claim are choosing metal for a different one.
Does insurance change the math?
Many Texas carriers discount premiums for a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, and both coverings are available with it. The credit varies by carrier, so the number to work with comes from your own insurer rather than from a brochure.
That is worth a phone call before choosing. An impact-rated asphalt shingle costs less than metal up front and earns the same class of discount, which changes the comparison for anyone deciding on cost alone.
Which one suits which house?
- Staying a long time, and tired of storm claims. Metal's service life is measured in decades and its wind performance is structural rather than adhesive.
- Selling within a few years. Asphalt recovers more of its cost at resale and costs far less to put on.
- Under an HOA with architectural review. Many Fulshear neighborhoods restrict profile, color and finish. Check the covenants before pricing metal at all.
- Complex roofline with many penetrations. Every vent, chimney and skylight needs its own flashing detail, and that work is more expensive in metal.
- Planning future changes. Adding a skylight to a metal roof means cutting and re-flashing a panel, not lifting tabs.
What has to happen before either goes on?
Neither covering belongs over the old one. A layover hides the deck, keeps rot and delamination in place, and loads the framing with the weight of two roofs. The uneven surface underneath telegraphs through metal panels in particular.
A tear-off exposes the sheathing while the faults in it are still cheap to fix. Metal roofing covers the panel systems in detail, and roof replacement sets out the tear-off sequence both coverings share.
